Silicon Valley Weekend Getaways Worth the Drive

There comes a point in every busy week when the days start to blend together. You’ve juggled work, family, and all the other stops and starts that life throws your way, and by Friday it’s hard to imagine a better way to spend your time than a relaxing weekend getaway. But the thought of getting on a plane for even a short trip just seems daunting.

Thankfully, there’s another option. In places like the Silicon Valley, you can enjoy the benefits of a quick road trip to the coast, wine country, or the mountains, without having to spend hours getting there.

Places to Put on Your Weekend List

  1. Carmel by the Sea

Carmel by the Sea is an easy drive whenever you’d like to take it slow. A walkable village with galleries, restaurants, and a beach is perfect for forgetting about your car and just wandering around. Along with some easy options for dinner and a trip along the coast, you could have a relaxing one or two day getaway

  1. Half Moon Bay

For something closer to home, Half Moon Bay offers a quieter coastal change of scenery. It’s the kind of place where the itinerary can be intentionally simple: a walk by the water, a long lunch, and an evening with nowhere else to be.

  1. Napa Valley or Sonoma

If your ideal weekend involves good food and a slower pace, Napa Valley or Sonoma can be a natural fit. Both offer wine, dining, scenic countryside, and places to settle in for a leisurely weekend rather than rushing from one attraction to another.

  1. Big Sur

Then there’s Big Sur, for those weekends when the drive itself is part of the experience. The rugged coastline, redwoods, and dramatic Highway 1 scenery make it feel considerably farther away than it actually is. It is worth allowing extra time, though, since the winding roads are better enjoyed slowly than squeezed between appointments.

Find the Escape That Fits Your Weekend

Sometimes the place you want to be is less important than the kind of weekend that you want to have. If you have spent the weekdays in screens, you might think about finding some place on the coast. Celebrating something special? Maybe a wine country and a big dinner will feel more appropriate. If you need the whole family to get some fresh air, maybe you should think about someplace with a trail or beach or pretty drive. You can also think about how much driving you want to do. A place that is about an hour away is great (leaving you plenty of time to do other things), but maybe two or even three hours is worth it for the kinds of things you can find there. The best getaway is rarely the one with the longest list of things to do. It’s the one that matches the kind of break you’ve been needing.

Making a Short Trip Feel Like a Real Getaway

A weekend doesn’t need to be full schedules to be filled with activities in order to be enjoyable. In fact sometimes leaving a little room open for spontaneity is what makes a trip enjoyable. So pick an activity or two that you want to do and leave the rest open. Maybe it’s coffee and a walk before the city wakes up, finding that restaurant you’ve been dying to try or maybe just a drive down the coast. Check the drive if your going to take Highway 1 and the road conditions before leaving, sometimes it can take longer than anticipated and you want to make sure you have time for that scenic drive to San Mateo on your way back. Being in the Silicon Valley can be good for a quick escape in the week. Sometimes getting out of the city and a change of scenery, good food and extra few hours can make all the difference of what day it really is.
